Below you can find our guidelines on visiting, borrowing and citation.
Loan Policy
Before submitting a loan request, please read the NGBB Loan Policy and make sure you meet the stated conditions.
To borrow a specimen, contact our herbarium curator Ramazan Yalçınkaya by e-mail at ramazanyalcinkaya@ngbb.org.tr and apply for a loan. Please include the following in your application:
- Type of loan: physical specimen or digital specimen.
- Physical specimen: physical herbarium specimens are loaned only to approved institutions.
- Digital specimen: you may request a specimen not yet added to the virtual herbarium, or high-resolution copies of existing specimens.
- Provide information about the borrowing person and institution, including the researcher's name and position (staff, faculty member, student, visitor). For graduate students, the advisor's name should also be stated.
- Add a short summary of your research justifying the use of NGBB specimens.
- Include an alphabetical list of the requested taxa with their authors (including valid names and synonyms).
- State your preferred geographic region, if any.
The loan period is a maximum of one year for herbarium specimens and 6 months for type specimens. To extend it, you can contact our curator Ramazan Yalçınkaya by e-mail (ramazanyalcinkaya@ngbb.org.tr).
When the loaned specimens reach your institution, please check the package contents, conformity with the list and loan conditions. Please sign and return the Loan Information Form, stating the delivery date, to the NGBB Herbarium.

Citing a Physical Herbarium Specimen
When citing NGBB Herbarium specimens, please correctly write the barcode number under which the specimen is registered, together with the NGBB abbreviation registered in the Index Herbariorum.

Citing a Digital Specimen
The NGBB Herbarium is committed to expanding access to information for researchers and the public. We support the use of the digital specimens in the Virtual Herbarium in academic and general publications free of charge. However, the copyright of the data belongs to the NGBB Herbarium; the data must not be altered and should be cited in accordance with the Virtual Herbarium Citation Guideline.
If there is no digital record of the specimen you are looking for, please create a loan request following the path stated in the Loan Policy. We would be glad if you send us a copy of publications based on our collection.
