The Illustrated Flora of Türkiye Project
The Flora of Türkiye, previously written twice in Latin and English, is of great importance this time as it is written in Turkish and includes illustrations of all plants. The project is under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye.
The Illustrated Flora of Türkiye Project is carried out in collaboration with the Flora Research Association, the Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanic Garden and the ANG Foundation. Owing to its geographic position, Türkiye has an incredibly diverse flora; about 11,000 species occur, around 3,000 of which are endemic.
Led by Turkish botanists, the project aims to:
- increase public knowledge of the importance and value of plants,
- promote scientific research and education through well-documented collections,
- support biodiversity by conserving endemic, rare and threatened plants,
- train plant systematists and botanical artists.
The first three of the planned 30 volumes are complete. The project plans 2,000 watercolour plant portraits and 9,000 technical drawing portraits. To access the web version, click here.

Red Book of Vascular Plants of Türkiye Project
The Red Books covering the vascular plants of Türkiye were published twice — the first in 1989 and the second in 2000. The second book in particular gained widespread national use as EIA studies increased.
Reasons for rewriting the book
- Since 2000, the rapid increase in floristic studies has resulted in around 1,500 new species/taxa being published.
- Distribution knowledge of taxa has increased, and many young botanists carrying out revisions have been trained.
- The IUCN assessment criteria were updated in 2001, 2003, 2014 and 2016.
- As the previous books were not prepared to international standards, they were not sufficiently accepted by the international botanical community.
For these reasons, the "Red Book of Vascular Plants" of our country (ferns and seed plants) needs to be re-prepared in line with international standards. Ensuring that the assessments are accepted by the IUCN and included in the IUCN Red List is the most important aim of the project.
